1. Look at West Plains, which air mass do you believe is currently affecting our weather? What do you believe is its source region? Within the next 24-48 hours, which air mass do you believe could affect our weather? What do you believe would be its source region? 2. Based on your knowledge of air masses, why does this map suggest that severe thunderstorms are possible for West Plains? 3. Explain how I would predict that West Plains could experience up to 12 inches of snow within the next 24-48 hours. In your own words, what do you think are the main factors which cause weather? 1. What atmospheric information must you have to predict which form of precipitation could occur? 2. Why is it important for meteorologists to try and accurately predict which form of precipitation could occur? 3. If you had a choice as to which form of precipitation is the most frightening, which would you pick? Explain your choice. For this week's blog we are going to create an action plan to help with the creation of an Animoto project. This project will address 3 separate atmospheric problems facing our world. These problems are: an increase in greenhouse gases, damage to the ozone layer and acid rain. Each group will be assigned one of these problems to address in an informative video.
Once your group is assigned its specific issue, then we need to develop a strategy to accurately inform our audience of the dangers of the problem. Your action plan should include:
Links to helpful websites: The Earth's Atmosphere NewScientist Passenger vehicles in the US Acid Rain for Kids Global Change Ozone Depletion PowerPoint The Earth receives energy from the sun by radiation. Although the sun releases a huge amount of energy, the Earth receives only about two-billionths of this energy. This radiant energy is converted into thermal energy after it is absorbed by the Earth's surface. Without our atmosphere, this re-emitted thermal energy would escape into space once the planet no longer faced the sun. Therefore our evening temperatures would be to cold to sustain life.
Since, clouds and ozone are two components within our atmosphere which help retain our heat, it is important for us to understand their roles in trapping this heat energy. Therefore, your job is to explain the role clouds and ozone play in keeping our planet nice and toasty for life. What benefits does our atmosphere provide to earth? Explain at least three of these benefits.

BlogsBlogs will be complex questions addressing specific topics covered in class. Blog groups will be assigned each quarter and class time will be given for your responses. New blogs will be posted on Monday and evaluated on Friday. There will NOT be a blog every week. A scoring guide will be available will be used to evaluate the posts. Evaluations will be conducted by the teacher and fellow students. Archives
